Dr. Alexandra Devane
Marick |
Alexandra Devane first appeared on Pine Valley soils on July 23, 1999 when she returned from Europe with the seriously ill Dimitri Marick. Dimitri subsequently died, and it was revealed that Alex was not only his doctor, she was his widow. Dimitri, however, wasn’t dead – he was at Sea View Hospital, where Alex gave him a treatment that saved his life. Alex and Edmund were shocked, however, when Dimitri disappeared again, apparently having committed suicide by walking into the ocean.
Dimitri’s will left Alex as head of the Andrassy Foundation, a position she shared with Dr. David Hayward. She and David had been enemies in the past, a situation that culminated in Alex pushing David down a flight of stairs. Erica revealed that Alex had been in a mental institution for a number of years, and together Alex and Edmund began to investigate her mysterious past. Guy Donohue showed up at Wildwind, posing as Alex’s horse trainer, but when he was revealed to be an enemy agent, Alex killed him in self-defense.
Alex and Edmund continued their investigation by traveling to Bryn Wydd in Wales, where they discovered Alex’s mother Charlotte. Unbeknownst to Alex and Edmund, Dimitri was being secretly held at Bryn Wydd, and they missed seeing him by inches. Charlotte was eventually revealed to be an international spy and terrorist, who had taken Alexandra as a baby in order to preserve her marriage to Mr. Devane, Alex’s father. The speculation that Alex and Anna Devane were one and the same person was laid to rest with Charlotte’s admission that she had brainwashed Alex, and that Anna, the late Spy Extraordinaire, was Alex’s twin sister.
Alexandra and Edmund fell in love, and when he asked her to marry him in a setting straight out of Midsummer Night's Dream, she happily accepted. The union was not to be, however - Dimitri once again returned from the grave, and when she laid eyes on her husband, the promise to Edmund was all but forgotten. She and Dimitri are now blissfully reunited and living at Wildwind, while Edmund simmers in the background.
