Tony Jones, a brilliant neurosurgeon, arrived on the scene in Port Charles just in time to steal away the sweet doctor Tania Roscov from his brother, Frisco.  Tania and Tony married and had a baby girl that they named BJ, Barbara Jean, after Bobbie Spencer, who assisted with her delivery. Tania was tragically killed in a car accident, which left Tony and BJ alone and devastated.  Tony hired Lucy Coe to help him take care of BJ, and they eventually married for a short time.  Shortly after they divorced. Tony had an accident, which left him paralyzed and blind. Bobbie helped him recover and they fell in love and married.

Bobbie desperately wanted a child, but was unable to conceive due to complications from a beating she had sustained while married to D.L. Brock.  The resulting miscarriage and effects of the attack left her unable to bear children.  When traditional methods of adoption proved fruitless, Bobbie resorted to purchasing a black market baby, which she named Lucas after her brother.  Tony thought the child was adopted by legitimate means and he and Bobbie welcomed the new baby with open arms.  Unfortunately, the baby’s real mother, Cheryl Stansbury (sister to Tiffany Hill Donnelly) came to claim the baby, who was taken from her at birth.  She was given custody, but soon found that she was terminally ill.  When she died, she left Lucas to Tony and Bobbie, so he was then truthfully their child.

Bobbie and Tony enjoyed a few good years, but definitely had their rocky moments.  When she had an affair with Damian Smith, her marriage to Tony was deeply damaged.  This betrayal, coupled with the death of their beloved daughter, BJ in a school van accident, sent Tony over the edge.  In a moving farewell, he bid his daughter good-bye, knowing she was brain-dead and that his niece, Maxie Jones, needed BJ’s heart to live.  Having lost Bobbie and BJ both, Tony struggled to put the pieces of his life together.

He and Bobbie reunited, but their marriage was never again the same.  When pretty, assertive Carly Roberts came to town and began to ingratiate herself to Tony and Lucas, it didn’t take much effort for her to encourage Tony to bed when Bobbie was out of town on a nurse’s convention. Bobbie came home early to surprise Tony for their anniversary and surprise him she did…he was in bed with Carly.  Bobbie promptly left Tony over the affair, but both were rocked when they learned that Carly was actually the baby that Bobbie had given up for adoption when she was a teenage prostitute.

Carly and Tony continued their affair and even moved in together.  Carly felt terribly threatened by Tony’s friendship with Bobbie and to drive a wedge between them, she mailed Bobbie the papers Tony had drawn up early on in their divorce to seek custody of Lucas.  Although Tony had no longer planned to use them, Bobbie was devastated and confronted Tony over them.  Carly’s scheme backfired and she and Tony had a terrible argument over it, leading her to believe that their relationship was over.  She went to a bar called Jake’s, in search of Jason Morgan, with whom she’d had an affair before becoming involved with Tony.  Jason was not there, but his brother, AJ was, drunk to the gills.  They ended up in bed together.  When Carly returned home, Tony was apologetic and they reunited and made love.

When Carly found herself pregnant, she was thrilled that AJ had been so drunk he did not remember having been with her.  She and Tony were excited to be welcoming a baby and planned to be married.  AJ gradually remembered his night with Carly and confronted her.  She ran out into the night and ended up on Jason’s doorstep, wet, pregnant and desperate.  He took her in and she came up with the idea of telling everyone the baby was Jason’s.  Jason told her that he would not contradict what she was telling people, but that he also would not lie if directly asked, so she would have to take her chances.

When Tony came looking for Carly and found her at Jason’s, she bitterly told him that the baby was Jason’s, not his.  Tony was beside himself with grief over losing yet another child.  When DNA testing proved that he was not the father, he snapped.  When Michael, the baby, was a few months old, Tony got a very bad haircut and kidnapped him, justifying his actions within his mind that Carly and Jason were unfit parents.  When Robin Scorpio learned what he had done, she went to him to beg him to return Michael, but instead he kidnapped her as well.  Without her AIDS medication cocktail, Robin developed pneumonia and nearly died.  Jason learned where Tony was holding Robin and Michael and stormed the place.  In the process, Tony resisted and Jason clubbed him in the hand with the butt of a shotgun, temporarily ending Tony’s surgical career.

Robin and Michael were saved and Tony was arrested and tried.  In an effort to connect to Luke Spencer via Tony’s relationship with Bobbie, Helena Cassadine interceded.  She blackmailed Alexis Davis into getting Tony off the hook with community service.  Carly was in the courtroom at the time of the sentencing and was so furious that she pulled the service revolver of a cop standing next to her and shot Tony, wounding him.  Carly was taking into custody and eventually sent to Ferncliff Mental Hospital for evaluation.   After time, Jason was able to get a court order releasing Carly.

Through his community service work at a local free clinic, Tony began to heal.  He was quite a dark lurker in the interim, including a tirade on stage at the nurse’s ball, berating many of the people in attendance.  Bobbie refused to let him see Lucas for almost a year, which emotionally crippled him further.

After his descent into madness, Tony eventually put his life back together. When the Chief of Staff of General Hospital, Alan Quartermaine, was ravaged by prescription drug use and ended up a homeless bum in the ghetto of Cortland Street, Tony was able to give him a drug to speed up detoxification and help Alan regain control of his life.  In return, Alan worked to have Tony’s physician privileges at GH reinstated.  Tony now divides his professional time between the free clinic and acting as a neurological consultant to surgeons at GH. When old friend, Rae Cummings came to town, she encouraged him to have corrective surgery on his hand and he did so.  After extensive physical training he is expected to resume his surgical career and be appointed Chief of Neurosurgery.  He mended fences with Bobbie and now has unlimited visitation of Lucas.
