Robert
S. Woods plays Bo Buchanan, Llanview's Police Commissioner. Bo is Clint Buchanan's younger brother and second son of the
powerful and downright ornery Texas entrepreneur, Asa Buchanan.
Robert S. Woods originated the role Beauregard "Bo" Buchanan in
1979, and except for a period in 1985 when he left to explore other acting
roles, he has played the part of Bo continuously. He won the daytime Emmy Award
in 1982 for Outstanding Lead Actor. He
has been nominated four other times in 1986, 1993, 1994 and again in 1999.
He
has been also been honored for his work as Bo with multiple award nominations
from Soap Opera Update and Soap Opera Digest.
In 1998, Robert Woods won his second MVP trophy from Soap Opera Update.
During
the Vietnam War, Robert S. Woods served with the US Army's Fifth Special Forces
Group. He returned to the United States to California in 1971, after
15 months as a Green Beret. He
attended California State University at Long Beach and completed his
broadcasting degree. While at
California State University, and after he graduated, he studied at the Film
Actors Workshop, The James Best Theatre Centre, The Directors Lab, and The First
Acting Company Workshop.
Early
in his acting career, Roberts S, Woods appeared in recurring roles on the series
The Waltons as Dr. David Spencer and on Project UFO as Lt. Bob King.
He has guest-starred on the primetime series, Family and Newhart, and
made-for-television movies including Chase, Just a Little Inconvenience, The
Night They Took Miss Beautiful, Police Story and Fantasies.
His roles on the big screen include The China Syndrome and Big Wednesday.
In
the mid-1970s he starred in theater productions at Disneyland's Drama Workshop,
where he did plays for Disney's theme park's employees on evenings when
Disneyland was closed to the public. Woods also acted in U.S. Army training
films, and on stage in many theater productions.
His most notable was a starring role with Dorothy Lamour in a Los Angeles
dinner theater production of Barefoot in the Park.
He got his big television break on the series, City of Angels, a show set
in the 1930's about a detective Jake Axminster, which starred Elaine Joyce and
M*A*S*H*'s Wayne Rogers.
In
1985 after six years playing Bo, Robert S. Woods decided to take a break from
the show to explore other creative endeavors.
He went to the West Coast to pursue other acting opportunities.
During his hiatus he acted in the 1988 miniseries, War and Remembrance,
portraying Commander Eugene Lindsey. He also starred in the Los Angeles
production of Stitch and Eubie, which won the DramaLogue Critics Choice Award;
the television movie, Carly's Web; and a television pilot, Changing Patterns. In
1988, he decided to return to One Life to Live and continues to take on other
acting jobs. In 1988, he guest starred on Roseanne; and in 1990 on USA
Network’s Swamp Thing. He was
featured in the Lifetime movie, Deadly Love. He is currently developing several
television projects, including The Garth Ryland Mysteries, based on a series of
popular novels by author John R. Riggs.
Robert
S. Woods, his wife, actress Loyita Chapel, who has appeared on One Life to Live
as Blaize Buchanan in 1988 and again in 1999 as Dallas Jones, and their son,
Tanner divide their time between their Manhattan apartment and their Carpenter
Gothic 1880 home in upstate New York.
