GH

As you have probably already read, GHH2 broke the news or at least the rumor of what the "Cataclysmic Event" (already nicknamed the CE on message boards across the net) will be.  Despite a tight lock down on leaks, scoops, spoilers and such like, this rumor has come about from good sources, but I'm going to be clear again that this is still in rumor status.

Piecing together what I've heard (the slight drip, drip, drip) from other sources with what GHH reports, this is what I'm getting:

Zander agrees to sign over his parental rights to the baby provided Ric works to frame Nikolas for murder.  Ric agrees to the arrangement, Nik is arrested, but it turns out that Ric and Nik have been in cahoots together to set up Zander to sign away his paternity rights.  Nik goes free and Zander is truly pissed (I mean, what's he going to do?  It's not like he can yell "I'm tellin' " and go all ascurry to Scott Baldwin to turn Ric in for double dealing his double dealing).  He grows a "bad Superman" 5 o'clock shadow, furrows his brow most menacingly and plots his revenge between grinding angry teeth and such.  He plants a bomb on the Haunted Star and then realizes that Elizabeth and the unborn baby are aboard, rushing back to save them.  The bomb explodes and the ship sinks, taking Zander, Brian, Sage, Mike, Edward and Lila to their deaths.

Additionally, supposedly Alexis learns that Sam knows that Sonny is Kristina's biological father and is going to tell him.  She uses the sinking of the Haunted Star to claim Kristina was on board, then sends Cameron off with the baby to keep said baby out of the mob life that is sure to ensue if Sonny learns of the her true paternity.

Alexis later has even more on her plate as she learns that Skye is actually yet another daughter of the randy Mikkos and that they are sisters.  I've heard that the idea of making Alexis not actually a Cassadine has been scrapped.   Helena makes her return during the last few minutes of January 16th and will be bringing information that will turn the House of Cassadine on its ear.

Don't worry about Skye twiddling her thumbs for the weeks of Anthony Geary's winter vacation.  When he returns, their fiery relationship will start right back up again as both actors and the writers are very interested in exploring it further.  Geary is quick to stipulate that Skye could never take Laura's place, that, in fact, anyone but Laura is "just play," but that Skye is definitely one who could keep Luke interested.

On the John Ingle issue, I have been waiting for info on this and learned just seconds ago... absolutely nothing.  I was told by an absolutely flawless source a couple of weeks ago (when I ran the "it's working!" column) that there were so many letters received on his behalf that they called and offered him a chance to stay.  Other sites reported that the chance was that on a recurring basis rather than a contracted status.  If GHH's rumors are true, he's still being written off and ABC's representatives "are not confirming or denying" his exit.

Also flying around the net (again) are rumors of Cynthia Preston leaving the show, some say by being pink slipped and some say by her own choice.  These rumors have been around practically since day one and I'm only going to address this by saying that at this time, the rumors are totally untrue.

Another rumor that won't die is the one about Sarah Brown being approached to recover the role of Carly.  Nope, didn't happen.  Tamara Braun and GH have no plans at this time to part ways.  Carly is in need of a lawyer in about a month, to be played by Marquita Terry.  This is likely related to her desire to commit herself to a mental health facility (corresponding with Braun's vacation) to overcome her attraction to Lorenzo (Lord, lock us all up if that's crazy).  It's rumored that the much adored long lost love of Lorenzo, Sophia, is being cast on GH.  How will Carly feel when Lorenzo's head is turned in another direction?

Let's add one more to the pile.  It came to my inbox that Blake Gibbons (Coleman) was told by GH that his services would no longer be required.  Not true.  Although his non-contract, recurring status does allow Gibbons ample freedom to pursue other projects, he is still expected to be making appearances here and there as very lovable, wry and oh so sessy Coleman.

Speaking of rumors versus truth, one FACT is that Stephen Nichols (ex-Stefan) WILL be having an event (Sunday night) at the GH Fan Weekend July 8-11th.  Dare we hope?

In that vein, it is also true that another GH tradition, the Quartermaine Brunch, has been canceled for this year.  The slot is open and another special event may be schedule in its place.  The calendar is shaping up and EOS will be posting an "Essential Guide to the GH Fan Weekend" within the next two weeks.  It will contain interviews with those who are setting up the event, a complete schedule of the events and helpful tips to ease your transition (if you're a newbie) into this wild and wacky GH world (a place that is not a place in a time that is not a time, trust me).

Rumors continue to fly, these from a very reliable source, that Maurice Benard has personally green-lighted the chemistry experiment between his character and Kelly Monaco's, curious to see what sparks can be generated.  Although deeply wedded to the pairing of Carly and Sonny, he's also open minded and professional enough to know that sometimes a soap couple needs to be shaken up a bit to remain interesting.  (Nay-sayers, go ahead and nay away.  Just remember that nay is what the horses say!  I'm tellin ya, this one is fer real)  I'm also told that at this time, the future of Sonny and Carly's marriage is uncertain and to later be determined (ditto for Journey).

J. Robin Miller (ex-NuLydia) took her release from General Hospital in stride and is currently happily touring Europe with her sister.

In shocking, stunning, blinding detail, Soap Opera Weekly compiled a list of violent events that took place in soaps this year.  GH required two pages to list all 120+ ("see other website as listing all violent acts on GH exceeds our web host storage limit").  Figuring a generous 260 episodes a year, that's a violent act every two days and 20 minutes or so.  To check out the full listing, click here.

Lastly, I'm going to say something that a friend of mine recently mentioned to me that I didn't really absorb until after the conversation ended.  Many of you will roll your eyes and smirk and think "oooh, she's such a bleeding heart" (I'm not and people who know me know that I'm not) and "oooh, everyone is so pathetically sensitive these days!" (I'm not that either and normally meet such comments with "Oh for godsakes" and a derisive snort) but when you do that this time, stop yourself for a second and think about it from a very fundamental level for as second.  What my friend said before the above episode ever aired was, "Isn't it sad when a word like 'wife-beater' is acceptable terminology for an article of clothing?"  Nuff said.

OLTL

Certainly, we can eliminate Gabrielle as the Music Box Killer, although the idea had definite merit given her recent mental instability.

Some excellent ideas have come from the fans (likely more inventive than the writers will dare to consider) about who should be the killer.  Nora was a great idea, the old fragmented personality story with that being the reason that all of the victims have to do with Nora.  Even better (in my opinion) is the idea of it being Lindsay, who only recently assured the audience that she is much, much better now (tic).  Knowing fully well that Nora is responsible for all bad nasties in her life both real and imagined, not to mention her rather precipitous exit from St Anne's would definitely put her in line for "still crazy."  It would also make perfect sense for her to set up Troy to take the fall.  This is my favorite idea so far.

The return of the perennial undead favorite of Llanview, Mitch Laurence, revealed to be the killer is an exciting idea as well.  Not that he'd have anything to do with Nora, but just because the guy is far too delicious to not have another curtain call.   Another possible blast from the past is the idea of our favorite cuh-razy gal, Alison Perkins.  In a recent interview with Soap Opera Digest, portrayer Barbara Garrick confessed a love for working on soap operas and would definitely be amiable to a return, saying, "You'll have to spring [Alison] out of prison first!"  Seeing Alison and Lindsay team up again would be fabulous.

There is still no word on how the brief return of Mark Derwin will be used to finalize the story for Ben and Viki, although as short of a stint as he has, it's expected he will regain consciousness, then die.  Get your tissues ready, folks.

Amanda Cortinas will be picking up the role of Adriana Colon (who knew she had a last name?), god-daughter to Carlotta and heavily lamented Soul Mate of River Carpenter.  David will take a jab at passing Adriana off as Dorian's long, lost (other) out-of-wedlock daughter.  We will take a jab at not hating this version of Adriana as much as we did the last one (no fault of the actress, but damn).

Inter-network Soap Diva, Linda Dano, will be leaving ABC (not just OLTL) at *some vague time in the future*.  Dano's official statement says that she will no longer be with ABC after her contract expires in July while rumors say she will be leaving OLTL in "early 2004."  Since I think Rae basically snapped her rubber band for the last time back during the ill-fated trip to Maui by Antonio and Keri, I figure maybe she is now completely cracked and may be killing people like crazy (pun intended)... maybe she's the MBK!  I heard she is to be a victim, not a perpetrator, however.

Speaking (again) of the MBK, don't believe it when Troy confesses this week.  It isn't that easy, folks.  Ty Treadway is slated for a 13 week stay, which began December 18th, with an option to extend.

Cord Roberts... next week... yep yep yep.

AMC

The crossovers are almost over as Brock Cuchna takes one of his last trips to Pine Valley on Wednesday.  STOP THE MADNESS!  I mean, does anyone really care?

Set from the beginning to be a love interest for Michael E. Knight's character, it's not expected that Krystal will be just a one night stand for Tad.  Simone is likely (again) to be out in the cold.

Of course, the biggest buzz around is that our own Olga Sosnovska (Lena) may be leaving soon.  After patient Bammers have buzzed among themselves about Maggie's "I think she doth protest too much" latent lesbian feelings, they may be getting their payoff as writers are reconsidering the relationship between the two friends.  Although rumors originally had the romance between Bianca and Maggie heating up as a result of Maggie's encouragement, now word comes that Maggie might have unexpected feelings of jealousy as their relationship intensifies.  There are also rumors of a new person coming into Bianca's life as a love interest, so lots of ideas are on the table.  It will definitely be interesting to see how it ends up.

Jill Larson (Opal) recently hurt her thumb in a cat fight scene with Donna Stuart (Mary) to the point that surgery was required.  Her injury will be written into the script in the form of an automobile accident with Palmer, played by James Mitchell, who also injured himself with a pelvic fracture, necessitating a wheel chair.

AMC took quite a jump in the ratings this week, tying with General Hospital, which was passed up by Young and the Restless, Bold and Beautiful, As the World Turns and Days of Our Lives.  One Life to Live followed, just a tenth of a point behind AMC and GH.

#1 Y&R 4.7/14
#2 B&B 3.5/10
#3 ATWT 3.3/10
#4 DAYS 3.2/09
#5 AMC 3.0/09
#5 GH 3.0/09
#7 OLTL 2.9/09
#8 GL 2.7/08
#9 PSNS 2.1/06

And with that, our week is covered for the time being.  Later this week, I will be posting my own "Best and Worst of 2003."

Hope you are all having a blessed and joyful start to 2004!

Much Love,
