February 23, 2004 Sweeping, weeping or damned near sleeping, we've pretty much put February sweeps in the rear view mirror and we're now heading into the fallout. Fans have been more than willing to voice their oohs and aahs and boos and hisses in response to the televised offerings. Next sweeps roll out in May. A reader sent me an e-mail telling me she received an envelope in the mail containing a box of candy with a Soap Opera Digest return address. Since there was no card or letter enclosed explaining the gift, she was suspicious, so she contacted the magazine who denied sending it. Evidently, the Soap Opera Digest mailing label was a forgery (the reader said it was very similar to the mailing labels on Soap Opera Digest magazines, but not identical). If anyone else receives such a package, do not open it, but instead, return it in person to your local post office and tell them it was not sent by SOD. Gotta be careful these days! AMC
Kat over at Kitty Scoop (soapnet.com) got my attention when she listed the formidable list of AMC beefcake let go in recent months: Sam Page (ex-Trey), Maximillian Alexander (ex-Carlos), Jason Olive (ex-Frank), Ivan Shaw (ex-Henry), Dylan Fergus (ex-Tim), Micah Alberti (ex-Jamie), Marc Menard (almost ex-Boyd), and Tomy Dunster (ex-Juan Pablo). Add on soon-to-be-ex Justin McCoy, Dax Griffin, and that's quite a handsome ninesome spilled on the killing floor.
Since it's been positively weeks since Maria has given her favorite whipping post a sound beating, we can look forward to that recurring event showing up soon when the news that Brooke has been doing some surgery investigation for Edmund. Maria goes ballistic on Brooke and bans her from the hospital. Do we figure there's any chance Brooke will give Dr Sweetness a lesson in bedside manner? I figure not a hope. Kendall? And David? Is a Pine Valley branch of the Most Pathetic Club opening up? (ala Todd and Blair) It's high time that these two town pariahs made good contact and although I suspect the idea will be rejected by them, I think David needs a roll in the hay as badly as anyone I can imagine!
Rumors are flying about the dropped tidbit that an AMC leading man will cross over to OLTL to romance a leading lady in Llanview. Word is it might be David Canary and these plans might be related to the contract he hasn't yet negotiated. Savvy readers, including (you guessed it) Kate, noticed the reference to real life fans, "The Jackson Posse," in a recent episode: Erica: Jack is looking for me? Ryan: Yep, Jack and his whole posse. If you would like to check out the real Jackson’s Posse, go here www.jackson-posse.com. The site is dedicated to Walt Willey, Jackson Montgomery and the Jack & Erica union. The All My Children writing team, headed up by Megan McTavish, took home the coveted Writers Guild of America Award for the Daytime Serial category. They were up against the writers of One Life to Live, among others. OLTL
David Tom will soon be joining sister, Heather Tom (Kelly) on OLTL, taking over the role of Paul Cramer from departing Brock Chuchna. For folks who might be jumping to the conclusion that one had something to do with the other, squelch the thought. David actually auditioned for the role of Joey Buchanan, only to lose out to Bruce Michael Hall. When it was time to re-cast the role of Paul, they remembered him and offered him the role. No first air date has yet been released for NuPaul. Broadway actress, Patti Perkins, who won rave reviews for her performance as Molly MacGregor in "The Full Monty," will be playing Marlena Haver, mother of Steven Haver, the Music Box Killer. She will be interacting with Bo and John as they work to learn more about her son. She'll be airing on March 8th.
Viki's loyalties are tested when Kevin takes over at the Sun during Todd's (short) prison term. Don't expect Todd to take it lightly. Speaking of strange bedfellows, the idea of David Vickers necking Aunt Betsy to death is one delightful thought of a story. When Dorian walks in on them after David accepts Aunt Betsy's million dollar indecent proposal, she is aghast... until she realizes Aunt Betsy is dead!
Did the brief reunion between Ben and Viki seem... odd to anyone else? If it were me, having my comatose husband wake up and be perfectly lucid, then slide back into sleep would make me pitch a tent in the corner of the hospital room and live off room service, not swear to go out and love again. The nonchalance of the medical staff to his waking almost seemed to imply that it happened all the time and I'd be pretty incensed about that. I've heard that the waking of Ben was less about giving Viki the boost out into dating again and more about testing the current appeal of Ben and Blondie in case "Life With Bonnie" tanks and Mark Derwin becomes available again. Should that happen, Ben will be waking up faster than you can say "Steve Burke." GH
Kin Shriner's final scene was shocking only in that they gave the screen vet a final scene. Of course, a number of questions remain unanswered like "What will happen to Serena?" "Where has she been all this time?" Did something happen on PC that I never saw (since I never saw PC). Foolish, foolish Comcast! Did you keep up with the Zander's body is Scott's is Zander's dance? Will we even know who was burned down there when we hear that Zander is really alive? Will this be another unfortunate soul like *whoever* burned in Lucky's apartment? Chad Brannon is still taping, but we're told it's primarily flashbacks to show what really happened to start the fire. The Biggest Event in Daytime History isn't quite over yet as we continue to have new information unfold. Speaking of which, did you hear that ABC spent over a cool million on the Cataclysmic Event and hired over 200 extras? My questions is... extra what? It sure wasn't people! Other than a magnificent Friday the 13th (lucky this time) where a full cast was shown in splendiferous acting glory, I mostly just saw the same old handful of people getting blown up, falling through floors and skittering up and down the stairwells. I have it on shaky rumor that Ted King has cut his hair pretty short. I guess "Unfrozen Caveman Mobster" look wasn't working for him. Last I heard, the Eurotrash hair was a specific attempt on his part to distinguish Lorenzo from Luis. King also is quick to correct those who think mistakenly that the two are twins. Lorenzo and Luis are non-twin sibs who just both happen look remarkably like Ted King. His long locks are in exactly the same style as my husband's hair, so I gotta let this one go. Love my Ted King, but the Andy from "Charmed" look was by far, my favorite.
Speaking of changing locks (and not the kind on the door), Tamara Braun was happy to return to her naturally dark hair color (below left, in the 1998 release of "Fallen Arches") and recently on GH. Cracks about the roots get old after a while.
There is an interesting, but friendly tug of war going on between Co-Head Writer, Bob Guza, who wants Sonny and Carly to be distinguishing themselves more apart from one another while other Co-Head Writer, Chuck Pratt and Executive Producer, Jill Farren Phelps both want Sonny and Carly to be "the couple to root for" and ultimately reunite.
At this point, anyone who
tells you they definitively will or won't get back together is
ill-informed
Despite some forthcoming "near misses" on a Sonny and Carly reconnect as the custody battle ensues, Sam and Sonny are going to be heating up every flat surface in town while Carly and Lorenzo take things much more slowly. Rumors still are strong of the Sonny-Carly rape scene, which gets more brutal with each speculation.
Jax offers Carly his help in taking down Sonny, but Carly isn't ready to use the custody battle as a lever to hoist Jax's Brenda issues into the arena, so she turns him down.
Michael tells a judge he doesn't want to live with either of his parents; he wants to live with Jason. The judge comes out of her office just in time to hear Sonny make a vicious threat to Alcazar. Timing is everything.
Jason and Courtney continued to be caught in the middle as both are pushed to choose sides in the battle. Jason tells Carly that he worries that Sonny will go over the edge if the custody war continues and works (unsuccessfully) to try and get the two to realize they still love each other and should be together for the boys' sake if nothing else. Courtney tells Carly she will not willingly testify against Sonny. Sonny ends up making a bold offer to Carly: shared custody if she'll stop seeing Alcazar (wonder if there's a Sam clause in there as well?). When Alcazar steps over the line in his aggressive desire to win the boys for Carly by discrediting Sonny, Carly goes off on him big time.
Dubbed by a recent source of EOS as "The nicest man in daytime," Ric Hearst is winning over the press with nearly every interview. Liz and Ric share an intimate moment as they see the baby's first sonogram together. Things are a bit rocky when Liz received a post-mortum letter from Zander saying, "If you're reading this, I'm dead. Ric killed me and you know why." Their love remains strong and they endure, even after Rik offers Nikolas a plea bargain to manslaughter (2 years in prison) if he'll cop to the lesser charge. Alexis has to decline to represent Nikolas, saying that her relationship with Zander creates a conflict of interest. With the casting of Jed Allan as Edward, there are rumors flying about the "de-aging" of the Quartermaines, sort of a reverse SORAS (Soap Opera Rapid Aging Syndrome). Recasts of Monica, Alan, Lila and even Ned could follow, but my sources say it's not happening. Veiled casting calls had GH fans speculating that one of my all time favorite GH characters, Lois, might be on the horizon. Her originator, Rena Sofer (ex-wife of Wally Kurth, who plays Lois' ex, Ned) isn't interested in the part, but a recast is a possibility. Anyone for a Jax-Ned-Lois triangle? For those who don't remember, Jasper Jax originally came to Port Charles when Lois went looking for the world's most ruthless corporate raider to steal her fledgling company, L&B (Lois and Brenda) Records back after it was sniped by Edward. Jax fell head over heels for Lois and pursued her relentlessly, even though she was very happily married to Ned at the time and did not give him any encouragement. The phenomenon of Jax and Brenda was created when Lois threw Brenda at Jax as a bone, begging her friend to go out with the handsome corporate pirate to distract him. Who'da thought? Sam and Emily have a girl bonding session in the elevator. Faith learns she can work through Mike to get Courtney, the newest Pier Lord, to do business with her.
Fans of Jonathan Jackson recently enjoyed a chat with ex-Lucky Spencer on his official website. For those who are interested in what the first Lucky has been up to since leaving in 1999 after a six year run on GH, you can check out a lovely picture of him here. He's with wife, Lisa Vultaggio (ex-Hannah Scott) and their new son, Caleb. Jackson's new movie, "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" opens in theaters February 27th. Tamara Braun (Carly) and Ted King (Lorenzo) will be on The Wayne Brady show this Wednesday, February 25. Check local listings for times in your area.
That wraps up another week,
folks! I hope your upcoming one is stellar!
