December 1, 2003
Hello Folks! It is with a sad and concerned heart that I have to tell you that the date is rapidly approaching for our EOS site expenses to be deducted from the EOS account and baby, there is dust blowing around in there. THANK YOU to the four people who donated this month. From a dollar on up, every one of you helped! Sage is no longer here to help make up the difference and my husband (our only source of income) is laid off, so literally, I have to defend on you folks to keep this site alive. If we don't receive sufficient donations by the end of this week to cover our monthly expenses, Eye on Soaps will be closing for the foreseeable future. September and October showed our lowest donation months ever, barely meeting expenses and November was even lower than that. I know a lot of people only donated because Sage was here to poke them into it and I do realize that he had a way about him that I don't really possess, but friends, I'm telling you that with our situation as it is, if reader donations do not keep us going for the next two months or so, we won't be able to keep going. In the past, I've been able to pitch in the remaining $10, $20, +$50 or so that didn't get covered, but now, that's an amount that gets into money for vital necessities and when I have to choose between site and family, family wins. I'm not telling you this as a poor me story because I fully believe all of this is going to work out and we're going to be financially stable again. Life definitely works in cycles and this is just one of our low ones. If there's one thing I have learned from Eric's intermittent layoffs it is that you sometimes have to admit when you just can't do it. Starting this month, I can't make up the deficit. If our readers enjoy Eye on Soaps, then it's going to have to be up to them to keep us alive, now more than ever. I love you guys and I love this site. I hope you will help me keep it around. (Pssst: HELLLLP!!) Big Daddy Brian Frons (Prez of ABC Daytime), frequent victim of Hoof In Mouth disease, strikes again in his most recent interview with Michael Logan of TV Guide. Ineffectively fielding questions about why he's bringing on heavy hitters like Heather Tom and Matthew Ashford while whining about trimming costs and dumping our own veterans. "The hard part of the job is to try and figure out which of our veterans - of any age - are still as incandescent and attractive to the audience as they were at the height of their fame. If we feel the value is gone, we let them go. If we feel there is still value but it's not what it once was, we renegotiate." He pats himself heartily on the back for keeping AMC's Michael E. Knight (Tad), then shoots himself in the foot (after it goes in his mouth, not a good combination) by citing the loss of Kristina Wagner as GH's Felicia, who refused to take a pay cut "to reflect her change in status from romantic heroine to matriarch." More recent and a more profoundly visceral imposition to the fans comes the news of what happened to Finola Hughes of GH and AMC (Anna Devane). Scoop-a-holics will recall that almost a year ago, General Hospital Happenings 2 broke the news with confidence that Hughes would be bringing the character of Devane back to GH where it originated. As is wont to happen in the spoiler world, scoops come out, they seem assured and then fall through, leaving the scoopsters who reported in good faith holding the bag. Although Hughes was negotiating a move to GH (the actor wanted to trade coasts from NY to LA and to that end, requested to return to the show where her character originated). Frons swears it was a decision made by the writers to not do the work it would take to integrate Anna back into the current canvas of stories. When the switch was refused by Frons, Hughes broke ties with ABC completely. He completes his comments supporting hiring newcomers at the expense of veteran actors by saying, "If I want to spend a little more money to make sure we reel someone in, I do it." If this guy started poking puppies in the head with forks for fun, I don't think I could like him less. AMC Yikes!!! I heard the most freakingly disturbing rumor from a very, very reliable source and I've still got chills from it. The increase in crossovers between AMC and OLTL are said to be testing the waters for a possible combining of the two shows if OLTL continues to tank. (Not my opinion... I think OLTL is the best of the three right now) The whispers have been around for quite some time that ABC is basically done with soaps and is merely waiting for them to finish winding down in order to allow reality TV to take over daytime. The powers that be are working to keep them afloat as long as possible, but it's like bailing water on a rapidly sinking ship and you can believe the powers that be have made other employment arrangements for themselves, sort of an "in case of emergency, break glass" contingency plan. I can't imagine a life without soaps because in the most literal sense, they have been with me my whole life. I started watching GH and OLTL from their opening days on, cuddled up next to my mom, cutting my teeth on stories of Janie and Howie Dawson, Phil and Jessie Brewer and the Baldwin boys (the originals, not Alex, Billy, etc.). Stupid things are forever stuck in my head. I seriously doubt that I'm going to be on "Jeopardy," say, "Alex, I'll take OLTL for $500" and hear, "Arte Duncan." "What is the name of Cathy Craig's drug dealer?" Images are burned into my mind forever like the moment when Carla Benari, who we all thought was caucasian, knocked on the apartment door of Anna Woleck. It was opened by Anna's friend, Sadie Gray, a warm, rotund black woman, who said, "Clara?" who replied, "Mama?" We were screwed up for the rest of the weekend. Happy Friday!! But that's how it was back then in the time of cliffhangers. So this idea of the soaps going down the tubes is unthinkable to me. For me, they've always been there. It's like the sun not coming up in the morning or the oceans all freezing to a chunk of ice. I can't imagine AMC and OLTL as a merged entity. They are totally different beasts, each with its own set of assets and liabilities and it comes down to that old situation where supposedly, Marilyn Monroe sauntered up to Albert Einstein and purred, "Imagine what a miracle a child of ours would be with my looks and your brains," whereupon Einstein quipped back, "Yes, but imagine the cruel tragedy should it be the other way around." Directly in regard to AMC, there are a few fine points this week. First of all, little birds (yes, more than one) are telling me that Michael's killer is actually Myrtle Fargate. Could it be true?? If any of the three shows were to give a veteran actor that much power, it would be AMC, so I wouldn't be surprised! Head Writer Megan McTavish is infamous for figuring things out as she goes along, so that would fit right in. I am eager to hear the Palmer connection to all of this and would love it if all of the older set came together for a little Pine Valley pest control. Regardless, this should be an interesting week in that respect! This also (finally) heralds in the end of William deVry on AMC. He'll be around in flashbacks, but that's it. Also gone this week is the ill-fated and much maligned Maximillian Alejandro/Alexander as Carlos. Kendall ends up being arrested this week with a bail set at a cool 2 mil. This serves a effective birth control for Aidan and Mia. Things come to a head between JR and Jamie over and JR learns some disturbing things about his new wife (on OLTL, we learn that she's actually someone else's old wife). Ha! Speaking of AMC, I just this second saw Ivan Shaw, the former blip of ethnic flavor, Henry Chin, in a 5 second moment on "Charmed." That show is just a hotbed of soap folk, famous and obscure! OLTL
What fresh hell is this? If you skipped the AMC stuff and went directly for the OLTL info, go back up here and read the latest rumors about show blending.
In 1993, OLTL broke all the rules for recasting and replaced dark and sultry Mia Korf (right) with blondish bombshell, Kassie DePaiva who, frankly, looked and sounded very little like her predecessor. Now, ten years later, most people say, "Mia who?" as, very similar to the Robin Strasser story, Depaiva claimed the role of Blair as her own to the point that few even know she did not originate the part. On December 9th, OLTL will honor the 10th anniversary of DePaiva on OLTL, who was then Kassie Wesley prior to her marriage to co-star, James DePaiva (Max). On that date, OLTL will air a special Blair episode of OLTL that is not to be missed! For all of those who are eager to leave their well wishes to Ms. DePaiva on this auspicious occasion, they may do so by signing the memory book at her official website. Get there by clicking here. A week from today, my personal favorite, Colin or Troy MacIver (I don't care which) returns to OLTL. Ty Treadway will be bringing Troy out of St Anne's on a kitchen pass to spread his beefcake joy to Llanview (and Katrina) once again. His steamy monkeysex scenes with Catherine Hickland (Lindsay) had to go down in soap history as the hottest ever. He's around for an undetermined amount of time, partly as a Music Box Killer red herring and partly due to my pleading, begging, weeping and pole sitting vigil (Pfft, I don't care, go for it, titter amongst yourselves). Regardless, it will be a joy to see Ty onscreen again since I'm SoapNetless and can't watch him be the insulin to Lisa Rinna's glucose party. Troy's first encounter with OLTL folk will be Gabrielle. What a team those two could make! We do know that New Year's means a re-engagement for Gabrielle and Bo, so the relationship (if any) between Gabrielle and Troy is not yet defined. The love story of Blair and Todd and Walker takes another hairpin turn a week from tomorrow when Blair realizes the truth: that her new husband, Walker, is actually her old husband, Todd. What happened to those rumors of closed sets and steamy scenes between Blair and Kevin? Not sure. The source was good, so who knows what's coming up since OLTL tapes almost a month out from airings? Kevin is going to be pushing Kelly for a divorce and with Blair learning that Walker/Todd has deceived her, both could end up as free agents.
NuKelly, Heather Tom (Y&R), will take over the part on December 11th, just a day after Matthew Ashford (GH/DOOL) comes to town as Dr Steven Haver, Dr of Sexatude and Feelupology at Llanview U. Tom is a double Emmy award winner for her role as Victoria Newman on OLTL and Ashford returns to OLTL (formerly as Drew Ralston) following his firing from Days months prior to the end of the contract. NuKelly is a contract role, while it is so far unknown how long Dr Haver (Dr of Sexatude and Feelupology and Llanview U) will be with us. GH
The biggest GH news to come forth in my humble opinion is that the magnificent Robert Kelker-Kelly will be revising his role as Stavros Cassadine when ABC airs the special GH "A Christmas Carol" segment on Christmas Eve, featuring Luke himself in the Ebenezer Scrooge role. Also returning will be Mommy Dearest, Helena Cassadine (Constance Towers), the difference being that Helena will be staying for a while according to Wubs.net. This comes at the perfect time as Alexis pushes for the sale of Wyndemere and seeks to bond with Nikolas as family. With the re-emerging of Luke from the shadows of virtual obscurity, bringing at least one formidable Cassadine to the table is a very good move and I am eager to see it brought to fruition. Supposedly, the Christmas Carol theme of this episode is NOT stand alone and is meant to evolve the character of Luke in a particular way. If THAT's what I get for Christmas, I'm a happy girl. When Mfundo Morrison takes over the long abandoned role of Justus Ward, it will be under the escort of Jason, who will bring him back from a monastery where he has been recovering from a disappointing experience involving the suicide of a young client. Jason makes him an offah he can't refuse and Justus jets back to Port Charles to defend Sonny (in Sonny's absence). When Brian shoots Sonny, it also reconnects two other estranged friends: Luke and Sonny. Before Carly flies Sonny off to France to evade prosecution, Luke approaches his former partner to ask for help with Faith, who has been shaking him down for a piece of the floating casino. As it turns out, it all comes down to a poker game, which Luke deliberately throws. Tracy puts an offer out to Georgie, telling her that she can get Alcazar out of Dillon's life... if Georgie promises to break up with Dillon and stay away from him. Georgie agrees. Dillon ends up in a very compromising position with Sage after they do break up and Georgie walks in on it. Hell hath no fury like a junior woman scorned! Sonny and Carly share a "shop the soaps" moment in France when he gives her a heart necklace to always remind her of his love for her. They go so far as to make plans for a life on the run with their children, complete with new identities, but Sonny nixes the idea when he considers (gasp!) the impact such a life would have on his family. Alcazar finds out where they are and phones Scott, telling the DA he's ready to testify against Sonny. He takes the stand and gives a highly damaging testimony, voicing concern for his safety should Sonny be acquitted. Nikolas and Emily become engaged, but the Quartermaines are not welcoming of a (now) penniless suitor for their princess. More LyRic info, however slim. Elizabeth decides that she wants to pursue a relationship with Ric and confesses this to Emily. Ric will be wanting some answers from Liz on December 19th. AJ says goodbye to Ned. Skye and Port Charles as he and Lydia retire to a tropical island with a good deal of the Quartermaine fortune (and I'd say that's a good deal!). I'm so grateful that they are allowing AJ to go out in glory rather than defeat. Cheers to a guy who is the consummate professional and made the best of years of crappy writing that was thrown his way. AJ gets the money, gets the girl and gets the hell out of Dodge. All the best, Mr. Warlock! Brian finds out that Capelli is working for Alcazar. Meanwhile, Carly goes off on Alcazar and collapses. Things look up for Carly on December 15th. "Look for wonderful acting on the part of Tamara Braun for this particular episode," confided a setsider who has seen the result of the taping. Sam's long lost father, Cody McCall (played by Stanley Kamel) comes to town on Friday, December 12th. Needless to say, father and daughter have conflicting stories about who left whom. That's about it, friends and netneighbors. I hope you have a peaceful and joyful week. May you never hunger, may you never thirst and when it comes to scoops, may you never jones... With Love, ·.·´¨ ¨))
