March 5, 2004 There are some tidbits of news around and about that I thought you might like to know. Olga Sosnovska (Lena Kundera) is leaving All My Children. Sosnovska was offered a TV series in her home of London and is returning to England to take them up on the opportunity. She is quick to say that her departure is in no way a reflection on her opinion of AMC, but is a personal decision to forward her career. She says of her departure, "As difficult a decision as it has been, I felt compelled to take this great opportunity. ABC and All My Children have been incredibly supportive and in no way was it their decision or intent to have me leave." There is no word yet on how her departure will be dealt with on the show or when it will occur.
Matt Crane, shown here on the right with wife Robin Christopher, (Skye, GH) will be joining the cast of GH as Lt Ross Duncan, new detective and additional eye candy on the Port Charles Police Department. Crane's first air date will be March 23rd. Crane and Christopher are expecting their first child in July. Skye's pregnancy will not be addressed in the storyline. Catherine Wadkins will be joining the GH cast as Mary. The character is a twenty-something brought on as a new love interest for Nikolas as NEm hits the skids due partly to a fight between Helena and Emily. What's for Emily? Word is that she and Lucky may have a chance at romance at last.
Fans of ex-Joey Buchanan (OLTL), Nathan Fillion, can catch him in the movie version of his defunct cult favorite TV series, "Firefly." The movie will be the first time series creator, Joss Whedon (of "Buffy" and "Angel" fame) sits in the director's chair for a big screen feature film. Whedon and his partners at Mutant Enemy, Inc will be teaming up with Universal Studios to produce the film. The original action-adventure series was set 500 years in the future and centered on a crew aboard a spaceship and the same premise will be carried forward in the film with "a more epic feel." Whedon hopes to bring back the rest of the show's original cast to join Fillion on the project, as well as throwing in some new faces. The fanbase for Firefly has grown enormously in the US and in Europe (where it just aired) since its cancellation and the film is expected to be well received. The DVD version of the series was released in December, along with 3 episodes never released previously, sold out in presales on Amazon.com within 24 hours. Go, JOE!
Coming up on the shows... On AMC, Adam will learn Babe's secret while eavesdropping. Bobby and Erica connect over a drink and end up in Philadelphia. Reggie meets Danielle (Derek Frye's daughter) and suggests she move into Greenlee's empty apartment. Imagine the Lamaze class with Babe, JR, Kendall and Bianca. On OLTL, John finds Natalie in an *explosive* situation. Ty Treadway will have another scene coming up, this time with Nora when she visits him. Kelly pays Paul $30 million to keep her secret. As a bit of spoiler, the much hype of a person who isn't really dead is referring to Rae. *yawn* She'll be back in Pine Valley, alive and kicking, soon enough. (Thought it was Cris, didn'tja?) On GH, Samantha is going to catch the sharp side of Alexis when she's brought to the witness stand in the custody case. Chad Brannon's newly taped scenes are NOT just flashbacks. Zander will again be bringing Maxie in on his plans, but she won't be aware of the full extent of his vendetta against Liz, Ric, Nikolas and Emily. Did you think bandaged Mac was a plot device? You're right! Word is that the man behind the bandages is Zander, not Mac. After Elizabeth confesses to killing Zander (to Emily, Nikolas and Ric), she is in a car accident and loses part of her memory (the Zander killing part). Ric remains determined to protect his wife. With February burning a hole (literally, in the case of the CE) in our rear view mirror, one could surmise that ABC actually did deliver on their promises for the most part. We did learn the identity of both the Cambias killer and the Music Box Killer. One was a reasonable outcome and the latter, an extreme disappointment. An overpriced, ultra-extended cataclysmic event was turned in as promised, although it certainly fell short on its suggestion that lives would "never be the same" and half the cast or so would be killed off. Essentially, as our EOS columnist, JenJen pointed out in her most recent Soapbubbles column (careful, there's some cussin), not much of anything has changed. The only real tip of the scales is Carly now being aware that Kristina is Sonny's child and Mac having his face burned off. After all was said and done, the only causalities of the CE were Cameron and a heretofore unknown Port Charles Hotel electrician (as well as some poor sod who wasn't Scott OR Zander). Yet, a million dollar flaming and exploding Tower of Babel was indeed delivered, even if the outcomes were sorely exaggerated. Eye on Soaps is pleased to welcome a new columnist who covers all three ABC soaps, Sarah Doctor. Her first column has been an enormous hit and I know you will enjoy her work. Welcome, Sarah, and thanks for an awesome first column! AMC
As you've likely figured, a major Greenlee- Ryan-Kendall triangle is heating up, but a new man is coming on the scene that will shake that up a bit. Ryan is moved when Greenlee (for the time being) really does want to make up for the trouble she's caused. Ryan has the impression that things really are done and over with Kendall, so he sees no reason not to press forward with his recently-gone-psychic connection with Greenlee. That motivates Kendall to work harder to rekindle (re-kendall?) sparks with her ex. The info that a new man is coming to town (and this is not supposedly Bobby Warner, returning as Christian Campbell on March 8th) makes me wonder if long dead efforts to recast Del Henry have been resumed. Del left town with Kendall (his fiancée) in 1995 and what became of the relationship was never really discussed when Alicia Minshew took up the role in 2002. When Sam Page was brought on board as Trey that same year, the casting call that produced the character of Trey was originally for the character of Del, but the AMC bosses liked the sparks Kendall was throwing off with Ryan and decided to pursue that relationship instead. Del then became Kendall's brother, Trey, with a few deft swipes of the blue pencil. When recently asked about the new character of Danielle Frye (Derek's daughter), AMC Head Writer, Megan McTavish replied, "Trouble." Danielle will be debuting March 9th, played by newcomer, Tanisha Lynn and is set up as a love interest for Reggie.
For reasons mostly drenched in speculation at this point, rumors are flying that after a green light for a tempestuous triangle between Lena, Maggie and Bianca, AMC is now completely backing off of ANY gay relationship and will, in fact, be manufacturing a decidedly male love interest (NOT Jamie) for Maggie. It's unknown at this time what caused the change of thinking. Previously, it was reported that the kiss between Bianca and Maggie was the turning point from which the triangle would spring up and Maggie's subsequent turmoil seemed to support that idea. Now, apparently the show isn't totally secure with that choice and is reconsidering. This comes as an immense blow to both Lianca and BAM fans who were each eager to see the bold direction AMC appeared prepared to explore. Of the three ABC soaps, AMC is the one who has historically been the most fearless about gay issues, both on and off screen, so this is quiet a surprise and we hope, just a rumor that doesn't pan out. OLTL
Vampire cum G-man, Michael Easton was reportedly "heartbroken" (to prove how sleepy I am, I typed "housebroken" and had to go back and correct it) when the decision was made to cancel his first ABC soap, "Port Charles." Easton says the cast had no idea that their last day of taping would be, well, their last day of taping ever and had to say their good-byes to one another six months later at Super Soap Weekend. After living in many places around the world, Easton was excited about the opportunity not only to join the OLTL cast, but also to relocate to New York, where he'd never lived before. Slowly but surely, John McBain (Easton's alter ego on OLTL) is building up quite an onscreen family. First, his connection to the recently dead and now possessed by Al, intern Michael McBain was revealed. Next, Marcie found his mother, Eve McBain, who now has a job singing at Capricorn (suggested as a love interest for Bo, although long term, a Nora-Bo reconnect is planned). Now, Michael and John's mischievous cousin, Shannon, will be coming to Llanview (Daneel Harris, March 2nd is her first airdate). Shannon is under the guardianship of Eve and is set to be a rival for the affections of River Carpenter, much to Adriana's dismay. Yes, Todd WILL be released from prison because of technicalities resulting from Blair's tumor affecting the reliability of her memory and impressions.
Anyone else notice that Dr Stephen Haver's mother, played by Patti Perkins on March 8th, is named "Marlena," the same name as the woman who recently killed off Matthew Ashford (who plays Haver) on DOOL?
Our suspicions voiced last week are confirmed this week by Michael Malone, co-Head Writer for OLTL, who freely admits that they aren't done with the character of Ben. One thing is for certain: Viki won't be moving on with Governor Brooks (she meant those words she spat at him at Asa's house!). All the writer will reveal is that there will be some "surprising returns" in the spring and that Ben isn't necessarily down for the count. Speaking of "surprising returns," the very frustrating spoiler released by the studio this week had keyboards ablaze net-wide, "You won't BELIEVE who returns March 10th & 12th." I'm pretty much open for it to be anyone and I can tell you, the choice of words do NOT reflect a glib and secretive webmaster, but simply a matter of that being the exact wording released by the studio and further info NOT being available! At the time of this writing, the name is being kept under tight lock and key and even my very, very, very best OLTL source doesn't have a clue! I'd love for it to be Mitch (if only), but I think we'll have to wait and see on this one! Many happy (or otherwise) returns of characters (both as recasts and original actors) are slated across the board for ABC soaps and seem to be running as a central theme. Keep your eyes open for new casting info as it surfaces!
Are you going to believe the writers or your lying eyes? Malone also promises that we haven't seen the last of Rex and Lindsay and this May-December romance is a go (I'm all for a May-December romancing and even have a good one going myself, but for all practicalities, I'm thinking it should at least be May and December in the same calendar year). The two won't be able to stay away from one another and at this point, anyway, the fling is set to turn into more than just sex. Both actors are into the prospect of honing out a real relationship for Lindsay and Rex and so far, the writers are as well. Robin Strasser is a fan of the group, Simply Red, that performed on the February 13th Valentine's Day show for Michael's surprise to Marcie. Since it was not scriptly reasonable for Dorian to be spotted in the crowd at Capricorn, Strasser grabbed a blonde wig and sat in the audience as an extra. GH
It's twue, it's twue! A friend of mine was on the GH set last week and confirms that Ted King has indeed shaved off the long locks and is now sporting a very short do.
It's not only Nikolas and Emily that Zander is looking to in order to settle a score. He also wants to take a swipe at Ric and Elizabeth. They will stay together, despite Zander's best efforts, but the couple will endure some rough patches when being a father re-ignites the competition between Ric and his sibling. Long term plans are still for them to remain together, but they are going to have some tough times in the interim.
Tamara Braun went on record recently confirming what we reported here weeks ago, that she is very happy to be playing opposite Ted King. She pushed aside the rumors around the net (and angry letters in my inbox) saying that she is opposed to Sonny-Carly split and said to ABC Soaps In Depth, "I absolutely am not unhappy working with Ted King. He's a wonderful actor. I love acting with Maurice Benard too." King was, in fact, recently instrumental in coaching her in getting the writers, etc, to approve of her new hair color on the premise that Carly has just gone through a major life change and that want to change her looks would reflect that. They bought it and she went back to her natural, dark hair. Orphie Goodlove has officially been replaced with Blaze. The powers that be are prepared to give Skye and Luke a choice adventure that will "put Luke in a familiar venue."
Three more returns are scheduled before summer hits, one in conjunction with May sweeps and the other two are presumed to be Lois and Brook Lynn returning to Port Charles as recasts. This particular set of returns will be involving Dillon's interaction quite a bit as he and his niece get to know one another. Tracy's animosity for Lois "English is not your first language, is it dear?" gets full exposure, but Dillon... is intrigued. Although rumors are strong of a Jax-Lois hookup, I'm hearing her love interest might be, well, a little closer to home. The powers that be had fewer concerns about Jed Allan's (NuNuNuEdward) youth than did the actor himself. When he questioned the writers about it, they said "Don't go to the gym, whatever you do."
OUTSTANDING LEAD
ACTRESS
I think if
finalists come from these three shows, we'll see Susan Lucci (Finola was
wonderful, but I don't see her holding out against the grand diva -
consensus, not MY opinion - although I do not feel Lucci will win the
award, just the nomination), Tamara Braun and Kassie DePaiva.
Nostalgia may give the nomination to Erika Slezak, but although she's
had some decent material, I don't think she's been given any Emmy worthy
script. Of these, I'd not be surprised to see Tamara Braun get the
award. My personal choice would be Nancy Lee Grahn, based on
talent alone, but I don't think she'll get the nomination.
I'd like to believe that
David Canary would win, but like many of the actresses listed in the
Lead Actress category above, he just wasn't given Emmy material.
Same with Tony Geary, who still might take not only the nomination, but
the award based on nostalgia, which does seem to carry some weight.
Trevor St John has turned in good work, but Robert S. Wood has been
given very little material to work with, much less Emmy worthy work.
I think Vincent Irizarry will be a strong contender (and would get my
vote), but I'm betting Maurice Benard wins again.
Any of these
actresses deserve the award, hands down. Kristen hasn't gotten
enough material, Brier is the new kid on the block and isn't likely to
get the nomination, but will take it over Kristen. Tough choice on
GH, but I've got a feeling, based on nothing but gut reaction, that
Cynthia Preston will take the nomination, although she'll have a hard
time going against the AMC gals for the award itself. Although
both AMC pre-nominations are strong and have great material (that one
will be so hard to call), I think RB might edge out AM. I do think
AM turned in better performances this year (but only by a hair), yet I'm
feeling Rebecca Budig in the final running.
I'd absolutely love to
see Tuc Watkins take it, but I think both he and NM are too new to make
it. I think Rick Hearst actually stands a chance, but I'm guessing
that Cameron Mathison would be most likely to win the statue of the men
listed here.
Eden Riegel is a really,
really strong contender for winning this category. It was wise of
ALW to submit to this category rather than Supporting Actress or Lead
Actress, a tactic employed by Sarah Brown (ex-Carly) for many years, but
I don't think she'll actually win the award. Kristen Alderson is
great and I'd love to see her take it. Ditto Lindze Letherman.
I'm betting ER is the clear winner, however. It would thrill me to no end to see Chad Brannon win in this category with MBJ a very close second. I do believe MBJ is too new to get the nomination, but CB might just pull it off or even win in the category. Again, these are just my feelings. Overall, I think we're going to see a very CBS heavy win this year (just based on rumblings I've heard), so I'm mostly just speculating on which of our people stand a chance against the other networks, which Kate tells me have turned out some incredible work this year. Final nominations will be announced March 4th on the Today Show and the actual awards will be presented on May 21st from Radio City Music Hall in New York City.
