January 21, 2004

As many of you have heard, there is interesting GH casting news afoot.  Turns out we'll be seeing Felicia return from Texas, not as a recast, but as the real deal, Kristina Wagner.  Her first air date is March 1st.  Given the tension surrounding her departure, compounded by ABC asking her to take a pay cut in keeping with an actress better suited to "matronly roles" than leading lady roles (their words, not mine), either she was desperate or they did some heavy crawling and pot sweetening.  I was never a big fan of Felicia's, but the truth is that the story needs Felicia and it makes no sense for her to be gone for this long.  I mean, you leave for a year to take care of a sick gramma, after being accused of being a deadbeat mom?  It doesn't make any sense at all.  Laura would be a good seasoning to add to the stew of GH, but at least her absence is adequately explained if not respectfully created.  Sick gramma or not, Felicia is being pictured as gone because she wants to be, again abandoning her young daughters.  Sick grammas can be relocated to Port Charles.  Nurses can be hired.  Daughters can be brought to Texas.  Regardless, she dumped her kids yet again and GH continues to portray Felicia as a mom for whom everything is more important than her children.  As irritating as I find the character, I hope that upon her return, steps are taken to paint her in a better light.  Since Rick Webber and Stefan Cassadine were basically good people who were corrupted by the writers upon their return, perhaps Felicia can be redeemed with hers.

Of her return, Wagner has said, "There are so many faces I'm anxious to see again.  I am so excited to see the cast and crew and work with these talented individuals."  What I found interesting was the official statement from GH Executive Producer, Jill Farren Phelps, who said, "The upcoming main storyline of the series afforded an opportunity to bring back the core character of Felicia - the mother of Georgie and Maxie Jones - to our show. As a result, we were able to cast the role with an industry veteran who portrayed the character so deliciously in the past."   Whaaa?  I guess none of the things Georgie and Maxie have gone through in the past year have warranted the return of their mother.  If this means, as JenJen speculates, that Mac is going to be killed off in the CE (Cataclysmic Event), I'm going to get some mad.  (Wonder if she can manage to get Roy DiLucca in her little carpet bag for the trip?)

Watch for the S&C split to get really down and dirty as a custody battle ensues.   It's Sonny's own behavior that ends up causing Carly to lose the last of her resistance to Lorenzo and they hit the sheets January 30th.

Courtney starts to spaz a bit as she realizes that Zander is being blamed for shooting Brian.  Jason tries to talk her out of confessing that she actually shot the cop and she even goes so far as to try to tell Brian, but she stops herself... for Jason.  Awww.  She'll do anything for her man.

Carly and Sam have some tense time in an elevator.

Watch for ex-Anna Devane (GH and AMC) to host Style Network's "Live From the Red Carpet" intro to the Golden Globe awards to air this Sunday, January 25th.  Check your local listing for time.

Odd OLTL news pecked at my ears today as well.  Someone heard the rumor that OLTL was looking to get rid of cornerstone, Erika Slezak.  None of my sources who have reported in to my WTF queries have heard anything like this and I would fully dismiss it with a smirk if it weren't for the rumors still flying of a massive wave of firings coming after February sweeps.  I can't imagine Llanview without Viki and honestly, I don't think this is something ABC would do unless Ms Slezak herself wanted out of the show.  Since she's been on the show for thirty-three years, one could imagine she could be sick of it by now.  Can you imagine holding ANY job for thirty-three years straight?  If I hear more on this, I will definitely let you know.

As a side note, I did get a brief snail mail card from Sage today.  He apologized for being out of contact (he's psychic, you know... I was just telling Coggie a few minutes before the mail came that I didn't think I'd hear from him again) and said he's been on the road constantly and out of internet usage range.  They started out in Mexico, but both were less than impressed, so they went with Colin's original idea and moved on to Europe.  They've been in England for quite a while (brrr) and have taken in several stage shows and seen a lot of countryside.  They've been through Wales (he says they use far too many consonants there) and now they're going to be moving on to France.  He doesn't know when he's going to be able to get to a computer, but plans to be back to the US in a month or so if all goes as planned.  He'd planned to be back for the holidays, but didn't make it.  He says he hasn't watched a second of the soaps since he left and that it was hard at first, but he hardly ever thinks of it now.  There was no return address on the card, so I can't write him back, so we're just going to assume that he feels our love and well wishes and knows how much we care about him.  He asked that I pass along his love to all of you and to tell you that you folks are what he misses most, especially his ho's.  He sounds very happy and peaceful and finished the note with, "Katrina, I'm having the time of my life."  Since he never calls me by my name (It's always "Lovey" or "Darling" or "Precious"), this felt very... sincere and not a flippant remark at all.   Just thought you'd like to know.

If I hear any more info, I'll be sure and let you know.

I hope you have a wonderful rest of the week.

Love & Blessings,

January 19, 2004

NOT a peaceful Monday and now we're an hour into Tuesday and the glorious, victorious, newsy column I just finished has vanished before my very disbelieving eyes in a computer lock up most foul.  *sigh*  It was magnificent.  I'm coming off of a few days of being wickedly ill with a head cold and spent the past two days white-knuckling it through a mess created by our web hosts when they decided they needed to move EOS to a different server since it uses a lot of bandwidth (um, that's why I signed up for the account that allows a lot of bandwidth...grrr).  It really screwed up our site, and today, I spent many, many hours recreating about a dozen new columns that were totally lost.

Now, thinking I was almost done with the gossip column, I excitedly hit save to keep it safe and sound and watched helplessly as the program froze up right in front of me, leaving me unable to access any part of what I'd just written.  I waited... waited... shut down all other programs, trying to free up RAM to boost it into functionality (which sometimes works)... nothing.  It just sat there for 20 minutes doing nothing.  It is 1:15am.  My alarm will ring at 6:15 to coerce me into getting my darling children prepared to trudge forth into the educational trenches yet again.

It's not your fault all my work, about 3-4 hours worth, just went up in a silent mushroom cloud of frozen pixel death.  If I had it in me, I'd recreate the beast, every rambling little piece.  Sadly, it's just been too woolly of a week for me to get that far, so I'm going to give you the finer points, pat you on your shapely ass and thank you for spending a few minutes with me this week.  It's not that I don't love you, it's just that mama's tired and thinks she might need some medication, a week or two in the tropics and a cabana boy named Fin to rub her back with oil.  Curse you, Sage, where ever your travels have taken you!

Finer points begin here, I suppose:

ABC - A friend of mine that I hadn't heard from in ages contacted me and it seems that she has a new job that brought some interesting info to her in a round about way.  As it turns out, Disney (which owns ABC) has just gone through some corporate rearranging of staff and it seems that some of the new highers up have a different view of soaps than did their predecessors.  The idea of replacing out soaps with reality TV doesn't have as many fans in the fat cat seats as it used to, primarily due to a quiet push from the (of all the unlikely allies) Christian Right, who seems to feel that reality TV poses more of a real and present danger to innocent eyes and ears than do the soap operas.  This drew a laugh from me because since they first started to air, the CR has taken extreme issues with the immorality of soaps, bed hopping, violence, love scenes, etc (and understandably so... soaps aren't exactly the best place to learn right from wrong).  Evidently, reality TV is taking an even harder rap (for daytime, at least) to the point that a re-investment into soaps is being strongly considered.  Eager to maintain its squeaky clean imagine, Disney has begun subtly encouraging the pumping up of ABC soaps, hoping to breathe in new life in the next few months.  Once the idea of soaps not going away started to sink in, the alarm hit as well, recognizing that the ratings are in the toilet with ABC straggling around the 5-7 slots at best and getting fricasseed by the other networks.  As a result, a number of stories are being put on hold, hastily rewritten and the scripts are changing almost every day.

Supposedly, this shift is part of what motivated ABC to unhinge the purse strings and pop for a majorly expensive gig for GH (their highest rated show) in the form of the inferno story set to air Feb 2nd - 13th).  Heavy computer generated special effects, location shoots, expensive props like, well, helicopters, as well as intensive and pricey pyrokenetics were brought in for the event.  It is promised that several main characters will perish and other relationships will be forever changed as a result.  There are no guarantees and GH is likely to be quite different after it's over.  I even heard rumors of Jason and Faith being drawn together as a result of their own rescue efforts in the fire.  Supposedly, all of the story ties that are loose and flopping will be brought together and tied into this fire.

One of the biggest sources of contention is the heavy hand of ABC Daytime Prez, Brian Frons, who is holding a tight fisted reign over the hiring, firing, coupling and uncoupling and basic tone and feel of each soap.  This is an unprecedented situation as such decisions have historically been left to the Head Writers and Executive Producers, who are now little more than talking heads.  If Frons is asked to step down or is quietly relocated to a different position, there will be very quick and wide sweeping changes in ABC soaps.

Thanks to the little bird who told me about that one.

EOS - There are a few must sees this week.  One is that our new Site of the Month award for January has been chosen.  Click here for more info on this new and wonderful ABC soap site.

Next is that the second and final listing for the "Best of EOS, 2003" collection has been posted.  If you missed the first part, there is a link at the bottom of part two for part one.  Be sure and check out the fine work our writers did this year!  Click here for Best of EOS, 2003, pt 2.

Winners of the Hootie and the Blowfish contest will be announced on Tuesday rather than Monday.  Not enough hours in Monday, unfortunately.  That will be coming later today.

AMC - The Cambias killer will be announced this week, as well as other realizations taking hold.  Erica covers for Kendall when the Fusion girls demand that she whip out her pregnant belly.  Grandma-to-the-Latex, Erica feels Kendall's fake tummy and swears to the girls that it's real.  Later, Greenlee breaks into Kendall's condo and finds the box for the fake tummy.

On the witness stand, Ryan's testimony is compromised when he admits that he loves Kendall.  This breaks Greenlee's heart and she flies into a jealous rage.

Nightmares invade the sleep of several PV residents, including Bianca, who actually has her dream prod a memory of something that can save Kendall from prosecution, but cast another suspect in a bad light.

Coggie wrote a wonderful column in this week's Cubbyhole[s ic] on AMC.  Click here to get there.

About had it with Juan Pablo dela BuhBye?  So has AMC and supposedly, Tomy Dunster is gone by Spring.

Pfft, don't worry.  Edmund wakes up later this week just in time to torture poor Brooke some more.

OLTL - You really should click over to Llanview Banner and read the very interesting letter Nathan Purdee (Hank) wrote to a fan who inquired about his status on the show.  He definitely doesn't mince words and tells it like it is, meaning Hank won't likely be back.  EOS wishes Purdee well.  Such a shame that a talented actor watched for so long from the bench.

Sounds as if MarcAl is being scrapped yet again as the Valentine's Day deadline nears.  Although Michael and Marcie share a hot kiss soon, the word is that Al will decide that it's best if Marcie gets on with her life without him.  We can hope that sane heads prevail.

I'd like to share a wonderful column that Sherry Mercurio wrote about Todd and Blair.  Click here for that one.

Do you like David Vickers?  So does OLTL and he is looking to be around for quite a while.

GH - As you've heard, GH has un-fired John Ingle and simply reduced him to recurring status with barely a blip on the onscreen radar screen.  About the reversal, an ABC rep said, "Whenever a story line is created for one of our characters, the script and the show's canvas constantly evolve. As such, the role of Edward Quartermaine - so perfectly portrayed by consummate gentleman John Ingle - will continue on the daytime drama into the foreseeable future.  The cast and crew are thrilled John will remain with General Hospital."  More appropriately, "Wow!  We didn't know you people were going to go medieval over this.  Our bad.  He's back."  For that, ABC gets the not so coveted:

Award

Of his bouncing status, Ingle, always the gentleman and professional, said to Soaps In Depth, "I am so delighted that the fans have voiced their approval of Edward and his role in the Quartermaine family.  Now I don't have to worry about saying goodbye. This is a wonderful way to start the new year!"

Greg Vaughan's people are still hotly denying that he's being fired.  I looked into it again and supposedly, if the problems that exist aren't cleared up, he's gone by Spring.

Tony Geary swings back into town the last week of January to renew his partnership with Skye.

Both Maurice Benard and Tamara Braun are eager and excited to be working opposite new leading opposite sexes.  Don't expect a Sonny and Carly reunion any time soon, folks. It's about to break into a million or so pieces and it's going to take a long time for them to reconnect, if they do at all.

Not so happy about the shift is Sam's other man, Ingo Rademacher.  Disappointed in how his character is being handled, word is Ingo is thinking of jumping ship.  Since he was recently offered a CSI in Hawaii type show, which would incorporate his adored hobby of surfing, we might be bidding a certain Aussie goodbye before long!  I do hear that the Sam and Sonny part of the musical couples game isn't going to last long.

That's about it for this week.  Sorry it's a short one (don't you hate when they say that?), but new and rumors are about as scarce as my energy right now.  If you need me, I'll be in the solarium with Fin.

Y'all take care and have a good week.

Love,
